What is WELHIRE ?
WELHIRE is a private transport service for wheelchair users travelling in Japan.
Every driver holds a Japanese transfer-care qualification — in Japan, assisting a wheelchair user in and out of a vehicle legally requires certification, and our drivers and staff hold it.
The name comes from "well" — the care and hospitality we bring to each journey — combined with the Toyota Alphard fleet the service was built around.

OMOTENASHI
Our flagship vehicle is the Toyota Alphard, with a comfortable interior and a side lift for easy boarding.
Beyond transport, we can arrange nurses, care staff, and interpreters, and support meals, toilet use, and bathing throughout the day. Omotenashi is the Japanese approach to hospitality — anticipating what someone needs before they ask.

SERVICES

TRANSPORT
Tell us where you want to go and what you want to do in Japan. We arrange the vehicle, the route, and the timing — including airport transfers, day sightseeing, cruise port calls, and long-distance travel between cities.
STATION SUPPORT
Japanese stations are difficult to navigate in a wheelchair. Lifts are often far from the main concourse, and boarding a shinkansen requires arranging assistance with station staff in advance.
Our staff accompany you to the platform, locate the lifts, and handle the arrangements with station staff on your behalf.

PERSONAL CARE
Transfer assistance, bathing, feeding, and toileting support can be arranged with qualified care staff. Tell us what is needed and we will assign the right team.

DINING
Vegetarian, vegan, halal, allergy-related and other dietary requirements are common requests. We suggest restaurants that can accommodate them and that are physically accessible.
INTERPRETERS
English-speaking guides and interpreters can be booked alongside your transport.
NURSES
Registered nurses can be arranged for travellers who need medical support during the journey.
Manual wheelchair

Rental Service
Manual wheelchair rental. Collect at the airport and return to your hotel, or the reverse — whichever fits your itinerary.
Why not explore Japan with a light heart and fully enjoy your adventure?

For Travel Agents and Tour Operators

Please review our Terms of Service before making an enquiry.
To get an accurate quote quickly, download our hearing sheet, complete it with your client, and attach it to your enquiry. It covers the wheelchair specification, the traveller's care needs, and the planned itinerary — the three things that determine which vehicle and staffing we assign.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I book and pay?

Overseas bank transfers take one to two weeks to clear. We secure the vehicle and staff only after payment is confirmed, so we ask you to book at least two weeks before travel. If you need a booking within two weeks, the vehicle may already be taken — but if we can accept it, payment is made by card or in cash at the end of each day of service.
Can you arrange a nurse or an interpreter?

Yes. Some of our drivers speak English, and interpreters can be booked separately. Registered nurses can also be arranged depending on the care required.
How far in advance should I book?

We receive enquiries from all over the world, and last-minute requests often cannot be accepted. Accessible vehicles in Japan are specialised equipment, not ordinary taxis — there are a limited number of them, and one may already be committed to another booking. Safe transport also requires a detailed online consultation beforehand. Please allow plenty of time.
Can you carry an electric wheelchair?

Yes, if it fits the vehicle. The Toyota Hiace takes chairs up to 120 x 79 cm and the Nissan Caravan up to 112 x 62 cm. The Toyota Alphard cannot carry electric wheelchairs.
Total weight of the chair and the user must be confirmed before booking. Our lifts have a fixed capacity, and exceeding it risks the lift stopping mid-transfer. Depending on the figures we may add a staff member to reduce the load on the lift (additional charge), or we may not be able to accept the booking. Tell us the actual figures — if the vehicle cannot take it, we will propose an alternative rather than attempt it.
Can you carry our luggage as well?

Often not in the same vehicle. A party of four typically brings at least one suitcase each, so four in total. With a wheelchair secured in place, there is frequently not enough room for all of them, and a separate vehicle for luggage may be required. Please tell us your luggage count when you enquire so we can plan for it.
Can you handle shinkansen station transfers?

Yes, and this is a popular route — but it requires two vehicles. Osaka to Hiroshima is over 330 km, so one vehicle cannot drop you at Osaka Station and then meet you in Hiroshima. We assign a separate vehicle at each end. This affects both cost and scheduling, so please allow time to plan it with us.
